A 39-year-old female asked:
Can you have side affect from dentist novacaine?

Dr. Richard Ruden answered
Dentistry 38 years experience
Yes: Many dental anesthetics are given via injection. If the needle punctures or nicks a vessel blood can seep and collect below the surface of the skin or the gum tissue. This can lead to swelling. Although painful, hematomas are not considered dangerous. Local anesthetics for dental procedures are designed to numb the nearby tissue. It takes time for these to wear off, you may experience parasthesia.

A 47-year-old member asked:
How long do the effects of novacaine last?

Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein answered
Cosmetic Dentistry 33 years experience
Depends.: Novocaine has not been used in the us for many years. Newer, more effective local anesthetics have replaced it. Some last longer than others and where the injection is given matters as well. Lower teeth can stay numb longer. The amount given will also determine duration. In general, numbness will last from 30 minutes to up to 6-8 hours.
