Great choice!: Benzoyl peroxide is a great choice for acne. Use the cream if you have dry skin or the gel if your skin is oily. Don't use too much because it can irritate the skin.

Many choices: Talk to your doctor. You can develop a plan for treating your acne over time. That will help take a lot of the stress out of having acne.

What is the best benzoyl peroxide product to use for acne?

Any BP gel or lotion: Otc benzoyl peroxide is a good treatment for mild acne. It kills p. Acnes, the bacteria involved in the formation of acne. It works well in combination with other treatments, such as antibiotic gels. Any cream may have irritating side effects in some unlucky people, and/or lead to uneven skin tones in darker-skinned people. One can start with every-other-day use and increase if no skin irritation.

No: Give it a try and if you can tolerate it 1-2x/day it's got a fair chance either of managing your acne by itself or forming the basis of a therapeutic plan along with prescription-strength rx. Talk with your personal physician about this at your next opportunity.

A 17-year-old male asked:

Benzoyl peroxide be Tee tree oil be salicylic acid for acne???

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Glynis Ablon

All slightly differ: All tend to dry out acne, but BP acts more like a topical antibiotic. Tea tree oil has some antibacterial properties, and salicylic acid actually deposits the acid in the acne follicles to clear them up. Depending on your type of acne I would still only pick one to try like a BP and then clean your face with either tea tree oil or salicylic acid wash. then see derm if not improving
