Not cure : Retinal tears cannot be cured. The goal of therapy is to prevent retinal detachment. This is accomplished by either laser or cryotherapy (freezing).

A 31-year-old male asked:

I have a torn retina. Can i sit in a sauna or will that cause it to worsen?

See an Eye MD: First of all i hope you have contacted an ophthalmologist right away so that the tear can be treated to salvage your vision. A sauna is not likely go do anything, but why do you want a sauna versus a treatment for the torn retina? The longer you wait the higher the chance for irreparable damage.

Flashes and floaters: Typically patients will note flashing lights particularly at night. They may also note floating 'specks' in their vision caused by loose bits of the vitreous gel at the back of the eye. Some may note a curtain over a peripheral part of the vision. All these call for an immediate dilated eye exam by an ophthalmologist.

Flap in back of eye: The retina is the layer of cells that coat the back of your eye and collect light to allow you to see. When the retina becomes torn the layer is elevated off of its attachments to the eye. Please see your doctor to see if you can have this surgically corrected.

Symptoms: Retinal detachment (rd) commonly causes flashing lights in the vision, scores of floaters and rapid changes in the vision. It is almost always in one eye only. Risk factors include higher degrees of myopia, trauma, intraocular surgery and conditions like diabetes. If you have any of these symptoms, see your ophthalmologist for evaluation.
