Left side of colon: Flexible sigmoidoscopy looks at left side of colon, last foot and a half of the 5-6feet of colon if something looks abnormal can get biopsied to look at under the microscop. Sig is not complete exam of colon. Biopsy does not mean cancer.

Not always : What gastro's do best is colonoscopy, especially at 54. There must be a reason why a flex sig is being done as opposed to colonoscopy in setting of "symptoms of colon cancer". Ask your gastro for clarification.
