Consider swimming: Swimming is a great non-weightbearing exercise. Another exercise is a stationary bike because you can position your foot on the pedal to avoid increased pressure at your injured site. Without knowing your injury, please check with your doctor if either activity puts pressure at the injured site. Your fatigue is related to inactivity as well as changed gait and using different leg muscles.

Neuritis: Nerve pain or numbness or burning is a common symptom associated with entrapment of a peripheral nerve in the foot. It is not debilitating, but very annoying. See your local podiatrist, an injection may be necessary to block the nerve and re-assess the symptoms post-injection.

Insect bites: It could be any insect bite. See the doctor if it does not clear up in few days. If it is itchy you can try Hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) by mouth.

Have it looked at: If it is only on one foot then there is a chance he could have a blood clot in that leg and should be looked at today. Swelling in one foot and numbness that came on all of a sudden shouldnt wait. Good luck.
