Dr. Lev Lubarsky
Cardiology 23 years experience
AAA>5cm may rapture : Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is considered a surgical disease if it is > 5 cm. At that point the risk of rupture is greater then the risk of surgical complications. These days many cases are done via endovascular repair instead of open surgery.
Dr. Kirk Charles
Vascular Surgery 22 years experience
Aortic aneurysms can be treated with low risk when treated electively. 5 cm is minimum size for repair. When being treated for rupture, the death risk is very high at 50-90%.

Depends: The natural history of AAA is that they enlarge and rupture. The larger the aaa, the greater the risk of rupture. AAA is the 13th leading cause of death in men over 50 in the us. Early detection by ultrasound and AAA repair can prevent many deaths.
Dr. Kevin Nolan
Vascular Surgery 35 years experience
AAA who cares: Abdominal aortic aneurysms can lead to bursting of the blood vessel and bleeding to death, showering of bits of clot or plaque into the vessels downstream, or can cause problems by squashing surrounding structures like the vena cava ( a big vein next door to the aorta) or a ureter (tube that sends urine from the kidney to the bladder).

Can long term use of sint john's worth/for depression/ cause liver inflammation in some way?

Haven't heard of it: Haven't heard of st. John's wort causing liver inflammation. The wort does increase activity of some liver enzymes, thus leading to faster breakdown of other medications (the enzymes in the liver break down the other medications more rapidly, if the person is taking st. John's wort). So, medicines like xanax, (alprazolam) elavil, oral contraceptives, statins for cholesterol, etc... May become less potent.

Exercise : Adding exercise and self control by reducing portion intake and eating the right foods while counting calories is best. Increase fruit and fiber intake if not eating enough. Take a yoga course or start swimming if not already. Good, low impact exercises. If considering surgical options, know that the best procedures and surgtons usually require that one starts losing weight first.
