Not understood: All mammals seem to require sleep. It seems to be necessary for the brain to produce chemical alterations needed for basic brain function but no one knows for sure. It clearly is essential and unavoidable. There is a significant amount of research being done on this issue.

Sleep: This has been an age old question and the answers are speculative brain and body reboot themselves in sleep also, google sleep deprivation, without sleep for a certain period we die, enhance its needed for survival.

Start w good sleep: Hygiene. Retire ; rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark ; cool ; use only for sex ; sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs ; no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. Keep dinner moderate sized ; finish at least 2 to 3 hrs before sleep. Can try warm milk, chamomile tea or melatonin along w light reading, warm bath or lavender scent.

You can't: Sometimes even 24 hours in a day doesn't seem like enough time to get things done, but sleep is mandatory for overall health and well being - six to nine hours nightly on a predictable schedule.

8-10 hrs: however, very often easier said than done. I advise no TV or music at least 2 hours before bedtime, avoiding stimulants, aromatherapy, massage and yes..."warm milk" still works. Power napping during the daytime can help make up for any shortfall during the day.
