No: In fact, surgery is almost never indicated for pulmonary embolism or dvt. Almost all cases can be treated effectively with blood thinners.

Almost never: As dr. Hermann said, surgery is virtually never recommended as treatment for a pulmonary embolism. Blood thinners are generally always the treatment of choice.

No.: Most cases are treated with blood thinners but more severe cases might need endovascular treatment such as a catheter and drugs to help break down the clot directly, a balloon to open narrowed veins or stents to keep them open. All are done as outpatient procedures usually. We sedate patients and use local numbing medicine.

Lack of blood flow: A ventilation perfusion scan is a test for a blood clot in the lungs, or pulmonary embolism. If there is a blood clot, an area of the lung will not be perfused, but will be ventilated, and therefore a mismatch will be seen.

Breast ca: Yes. Both men and women get breast cancer. The shutting off of the ovaries will decrease the estrogen production but the testosterone shots have their own issues. Regardless, the risk is still there.

Yes: I generally encourage exercise after joint replacement. It is important to maintain muscle tone, weight control and general health. I don't recommend activities which involve impacts such as running.

Physical therapy: Working with a physical therapist to increase range of motion, strength and improve gait is generally recommended. Patients usually start with a walker and progress to a cane or no assistance with time. Early weight bearing is encouraged in most cases.
