A 22-year-old female asked:

Is it ok to get laser liposuction when you have type 2 diabetes?

Not really: As a diabetic, you need everything you've got to fight a possibility of an infection. Because tissues are burned (blood vessels, lymphatics and connective tissue) in laser assisted lipo, your ability to ward off infection is reduced significantly. Traditional, tumescent liposuction using small cannulas should be a much better choice. Good luck from nyc. For more info visit www.Drgrossman.Com.

Yes : Yes in the hands of an experienced surgeon performing liposuction on limited localized fatty deposits in a type 2 diabetic who is otherwise a good candidate for surgery without any cardiovascular disease and who exercises tight control of their diabetes.

Not safe: One of the most devastating complications related to liposuction is necrotizing fasciitis. The fascia is the white tissue that surrounds muscles. Liposuction of the abdominal wall can introduce small amounts of bacteria into the site of liposuction. Patients with type 2 diabetes have decreased capacity to fight off infection. Thus the risk of serious infection post liposuction is increased.

Lipo risk factors: The answer to your question is the same for laser lipo and other types of liposuction. In general, type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for any type of surgery but in otherwise healthy patients liposuction might be considered. Lipo is not done on overweight patients or for weight loss however.
