Asperger: Main features are qualitative impairment in social interactions with lack of empathy, stereotyped restricted patterns of behaviors/activities/interests, no delay in cognitive development or language. Other associated features can include intense preoccupation with a narrow subject, clumsiness & restricted use of words.

Clinical symptoms: There are no blood tests or other objective measures to diagnose asperger's syndrome. You need to see someone with training and expertise in autism-related disorders. That person will go over history especially related to social interactions and interests and unusual or oddly intense behaviors or preoccupations. There are some standardized instruments some clinicians use to cover these issues.

Clinically: Asperger syndrome, like autism, is diagnosed by clinical observation and feedback from family and teachers. There is no link to vaccines and parenting style does not cause Asperger or autism. Look for behavioral aspects; a strange fascination with mundane objects, stereotyped or ritualistic movements, or a lack of social interaction.

By a psych eval: By seeing a psychiatrist who, after a psychiatric evaluation will compare your symptoms (and his findings) with criteria listed in the dsm 4 (criteria available online). If he considers that you meet the necessary criteria, voila.

Don't know: Mental health professionals and neurologists diagnose this disorder. Since we do not know the cause or causes of this disorder, it is difficult to determine who is most at risk.
