Its essential: It rejuvenates the brain in ways we don't understand yet. If we don't sleep for a long enough period, we will die.

Is it important to stick to a sleep schedule?

Yes: Absolutely. We all know the answer to that one anyway. We need a rhythm in our life. We need a schedule to tell our bodies when to wake, eat, poop and sleep. When we have schedule, we always know what's coming and what to get ready for. Start your babies early with their sleep routines, and they will make a lot easier for you to put them to bed at night.

Sleep immune power: One night awake till 3am can reduce immune power by 50% the day after. If body is weak, immune is weakened. Sleep is for all body systems rest and recuperation. Immune is part of whole body harmony. All body functions are in an absolute inter-dependency. Eat well balanced meals, exercise regularly, sleep 7-8h/d, good social life insure minimal health problem when older.
A 34-year-old member asked:

Is sleep quantity or schedule more important?

Dr. Michelle Zetoony
Sleep Medicine 18 years experience
Hard question: Not sure what is meant. Sleep quantity (as long as at least 6 hours) should be on a set schedule. So i vote for schedule. The body needs continuous sleep to go through the sleep cycles, particularly deep sleep. So if sleep is broken up in 2 hours sections, you don't get all that you need.

Which one is more important, sleep or breakfast?

Um, sleep.: Sleep should definitely last longer and be more beneficial that one single meal. Sleep may even be more important than exercise, at least in my book. To feel rested and restored not just for one day but for the 3 days following, you need to have good sleep.
A 30-year-old member asked:

Why would sleep be so important, and what happens to you while you are asleep?

Everything: There are several phases of sleep and one of the most important levels for maximum rest and renovation is delta phase. This is the deepest level of sleep in which hgh (human growth hormone) is released influencing every cell and in children provides one of the most potented hormones that naturally helps the body to grow and develop. This is why infants require so much sleep.
