Change toothpaste: A lot of canker sores are caused by sodium lauryl sulfate which is the sudsing agent in toothpaste. Other ingredients that people are sensitve to include tartar control, whitening agents and mouthwashes with alcohol. Switch to a plain toothpaste that doesn't suds a lot and see if things get better. If you still have problems talk with your dentist.

No: But there's treatment to make them go away sooner. See your dentist to find out what kind of ulcers you're getting and (s)he'll recommend the appropriate medication.

Depends : If you are referring to ulcers that you get when you get sick those disappear on their own within days. If you have had them for a while you need to schedule an appointment with your pediatrician to find out the cause and the way to get rid of them. Good luck.

What type?: Mouth ulcers may be from many causes and their treatment depends upon what is causing it. See your dentist to find out what it is and then you can be advised as to the best way to treat it. Most will go away on their own, but some may be related to other issues requiring treatment.

How do you cure mouth ulcers, and why does it happen to me at times?

Dr. Paul Brand
Dentistry 37 years experience
Ulcer causes: Mouth ulcers come in a variety of different entities, and the causes are not always the same. It is important to have an ulcer examined by your dentist, or referred if need be, because there are too many different causes for anyone to diagnose it without an exam. If an ulcer reoccurs, that's a good reason to have it checked.
A 42-year-old member asked:

Is it possible to cure mouth ulcers quickly?

Dr. Daniel Wolter
Dentistry 30 years experience
Not By Yourself: Most mouth sores heal spontaneously over a period of a couple of weeks. There are no proven over-the-counter products which speed-up this process. For very specific types of ulcers, your dentist can stop the pain with medication or a laser. Even with this type of treatment, the healing time isn't usually any faster, but at least the pain is gone. Your dentist can help you, so give him/her a call.
