A 34-year-old member asked:

is it safe to have lasik eye surgery while pregnant?

No: Lasik is "safe" from the perspective of risks of harm to the mother or fetus but, "will the procedure be effective"? Pregnancy is associated with visual accuity changes related to fluid retention and corneal edema. Elective vision correction surgery is best done in a baseline non-pregnant condition to achieve long term good results. More than "what meets the eye" must be considered here.
Dr. Nicholas Fogelson

Yes: Its safe, but i don't think any opthalmologist would do it.
Dr. Jay Pepose
Ophthalmology 39 years experience
No.: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause changes in the shape of the cornea, just as they allow ligaments in the body to relax, resulting in fluctuating vision before or after lasik. Dry eye also is more common during pregnancy and this has been associated with regression of the laser effect. Many doctors give Valium preop and steroids drops postop, which may not be optimal during pregnancy.

I agree with Dr Pepose, we do not recommend elective LASIK surgery until 6 weeks after a new mom is finished nursing - so that time frame should be considered in planning LASIK surgery

Not recommended: I agree with dr. Pepose. I would not recommend it during pregnancy for any member of my family.

During pregnancy and while breast feeding. Please wait until your menstrual cycles return to its baseline prior to your pregnancy.

No: No. Prescription is not stable due to high circulating hormone levels. Wait 6-8 weeks after delivery and breastfeeding is complete.
Dr. Richard Witlin

No: would recommend you wait until after your pregnancy is completed.

Unlikely: With a large proportion of s. Pneumonii (most common bacteria causing middle ear infection) becoming resistant to penicillin, the mainstay of antibiotics treatment for "ear infection" is currently a high dose of amoxicillin.

A 19-year-old female asked:

I am about 4 to 5 weeks pregnant i've been bleeding for a week already. I have no cramps nor blood clots . I went to the doctors yesturday and was told there was an egg sac but they couldn't see anything inside of it. The doctor told me I may be too early

Correct!: This early in pregnancy makes it difficult to discern whether it is a developing fetus in the egg sac or a "blighted ovum" of a possible miscarrriage. The "tincture of time" will tell the difference. Be patient as mother nature works on her own schedule.

Around my aunt eye there is some swelling , some pain , itchy. The pain level is a 5 on a scale 1-10 . Should we be concerned ?

See an eye doctor: Swelling and pain around the eye may be caused by an infection. If left untreated, it can potentially get into the eye socket and even the brain. Your aunt should be evaluated by an eye doctor immediately.
A member asked:

What does a negative pregnancy test look like ? Are both lines dark ? I took the equate one from walmart (walmart brand) and I was curious if it was a false negative or if it was too early my period isnt due for another 2 weeks

It depends: Each test is different. Most tests show two bars as positive. The package will tell you the best time to take a test. Typically mid void first thing in the morning. The closer to the time of expected next period is best.
