why exactly does peritoneal dialysis need a greater amount of protein?

Protein loss: Due to its anatomy the natural peritoneal membrane used in this kind of dialysis is a leaky one that allows passage of proteins especially Albumin to the fluid that will be discarded in the bag after dialysis so a good diet with proteins is a must.

PD: Dialysis via peritoneal dialysis promotes loss of amino acids and loss of large protein molecules. In general a 24 hour session of PD will cause of the loss of approximately 8-15 grams of protein and amino acids. If a person acquires peritonitis, then more protein will be lost. Hence extra protein intake is essential.

60 g: During pregnancy and breastfeeding, we need 60 grams (gm) of protein a day. This is 15-20 gm more than usual. This "extra" is the equivalent of one egg, 1/4 cup of cheese, or one glass of milk. It is also important to maintain a well balanced diet and to stay on your prenatal vitamins.

What can I do to manage my baby's intolerance for soy milk protein?

Use a nonsoy formula: 10% or more of babies allergic to milk formula are allergic to soy. If you are using soy formula for the above reason you may need to try a more elemental formula such as nutramigen or alimentum which do not have the major allergen in other milk based formulas.

GFR 10: This differs for everyone but in a relatively narrow range. Some patients with cardiac disease benefit from dialysis at higher GFR (low creatinine), african americans seem to tolerate higher creatinine without symptoms. In general convert the creatinine to egfr (online calculator) and expect dialysis at egfr less than 15 ml/min.
