Can be hereditary: Painful breast swelling and lumpiness in the breasts, worse around the menstrual cycle, is a common feeling from fibrocystic breasts. Dense mammogram findings and cysts can be seen on breast ultrasound. Hereditary factors may cause some women to have more fibrocystic problems than others. Some sites say that this condition affects more than half of women. It resolves with menopause.

Most women have it!: Fibrocystic changes cause breast to feel firm, lumpy and often painful. The changes are most prominent during the menstrual cycle. The term disease has largely been dropped because 65% of women have fibrocystic changes. It is mostly hereditary. although caffeine, and other habits, can make it worse.

Fibrocystic breasts: Cause is the normal fluctuation of monthly hormones and about 70% of women have it. It is the cystic dilatation of the milk ducts prior to menses after ovulation that produces the cysts and tenderness mostly. Goes away usually after menopause if no hormones are taken.

More info needed.: There are women with dense breasts and palpable cysts...There are also women with fatty breasts and some have both, the fat is very radiolucent, the fibrocyctic tissue less so, so there are palpation and mammographic differences.
