75% work. 50% wt los: The band works in about 75% of patients. The eventual band removal rate is about 25%. You must be willing to get fills to tighten the band and then eat solid food that gets.

It's you: The band is a tool. You do the work. If you don't want to do the work then wait until you really are willing.

I was denied gastric banding but have been offered the balloon. What do you think?

Prob bad idea: I'm not sure what procedure the ballon is other than the intra-gastric ballon. This is still considered experimental and i'm surprised your insurance will actually cover this procedure. It is a temporary fix as the ballon should not be left in place longer than 3-6 months.Stick with tried and approved procedures such as the band, bypass, sleeve or duodenal switch.Insurance will usually cover these.

Depending on your Body Mass Index, the gastric band may not be the best choice for you; I agree with Dr. St. Laurent that you should consider a gastric bypass, gastric sleeve resection, or duodenal switch.

A 28-year-old male asked:
What is the definition or description of: gastric banding?

Dr. Terry Simpson answered

Weight loss: The band is placed around the stomach to decrease appetite. It does not work when you eat- it works two hours later. The band adds pressure to the stomach and that allows your body to be fooled into thinking your last meal was more than it was. It does not make you feel full, it does not make you feel satisfied when you eat, it works two hours later. - it is a great weight loss operation.
