It can: Anxiety causes many physical symptoms all over your body -- including muscle tension in shoulders and neck. Some people take pain meds for this, but a more direct intervention is to help the anxiety itself. You can see a therapist to explore & deal with your anxiety. If need be, antianxiety medications may also be used. You can also help yourself by getting massage, doing deep breathing, etc.

Anxiety: Dr. Pappas provided excellent information. Tightened and sometimes aching muscles in the shoulders often occur with people who are experiencing anxiety.
