A 45-year-old male asked:
what the treatment options for plantar fibroma?

Steroid injections: A plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot or lump in the arch of the foot. It is inside the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that goes from the heel to the toes on the bottom of the foot. Treatment may be corticosteroid injections into the lump to shrink it, plus some custom orthotic shoe inserts, with some physical therapy. Then, there can be surgery if the other treatments did not help.

Depends if it is : Painful or not. One can leave it alone assuming the diagnosis is confirmed. Treatments may include topical verapamil, cryotherapy, steroid injections, or surgical excision. I do think it is important to confirm the diagnosis via biopsy whether treating or not.

Plantar fibroma: Treatment ranges from conservative to surgical. Conservative treatment consists of orthotics that accommodate the mass, use of topical verapamil, or injection therapy. Surgical excision can be performed but fibromas can recur. There are some studies supporting radiation therapy as well for very invasive and recalcitrant cases.

There are not many options when is comes to treating a plantar fibroma besides surgical excision. This condition is usually only treated when it is painful. Conservative treatments include steroid injections and topical creams such as verapamil. These treatments have been shown to reduce the size of the fibroma. Please consult a podiatric foot and ankle specialist for more information about your condition or visit www.eastpennfoot.com

Neurofibromatosis: Neurofibromatosis type 1 and 2 are conditions caused by genetic reasons. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can take for these conditions. Treatment is only symptomatic, meaning if you had a tumor affecting your vision you can get a surgery and if you had seizures you can take anti-seizure medications.

Skin tag: Fibroma molle (soft) as opposed to fibroma durum (hard) refers to benign skin tags often with a stalk (polypoid). They are common during pregnancy and are otherwise harmless and may disappear post partum. When bothersome, dermatologists can easily remove them. Areas where you can find them: eyelids, neck, armpits, groin, between skin folds.

A fibrous tumor : Oma means tumor (could be cancerous or benign) and fibr relates to fibrous or firm, scar-like collagenous growths. Fibromas are usually firm and are not cancerous. Fibroadenomas are firm glandular-type benign tumors of the breast, for example. Fibroma is a pretty general term, like "mole.".
