Deafness, neurologic: 10% of affected fetuses are symptomatic at birth: small size for gestational age, hepatosplenomegaly, petechiae and purpura of the skin, and jaundice at birth. >2/3 of the newborns with symptomatic congenital CMV infection will have neurologic involvement, including microcephaly, seizures, abnormal neurologic examination, and feeding difficulties. Most have progressive deafness (sensorineural).

Varies considerably: This can have a small impact or lead to abortion and major organ damage. The earlier in pregnancy a mother has it, the more likely it will be devastating. If it happens near the end, there may be isolated progressive hearing loss & other issues but the kid usually is otherwise normal.

How can I protect my unborn baby from group b strep?

Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
OB/peds have protocl: The frequency of invasive group b strep disease has declined since the adoption of surveillance and treatment protocols by ob's & peds. Since gbs can come & go, most moms will be screened at 35-37 wks & receive abx during labor if positive, if status unknown she will be treated. Babies are monitored, tested& treated if any signs appear that suggest invasive disease. Discuss your concerns with ob.

Difficult teens: The teen years are not just a problem for parents. Teens go through puberty at differing rates which triggers a lot of "am i normal" thoughts. They become self conscious about weight, clothing, hair, sexuality, money etc as their brain matures & they see the diversity in their friends.Significant anxiety occurs in up to half & many need third party counseling thru the rough spots.

What causes nicks in my fetal artery dopplers, and how can I prevent them?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Nikolaos Zacharias
Maternal-Fetal Medicine 26 years experience
Not clear question..: If you are referring to umbilical artery abnormal doppler velocimetry, this is a specialized test for growth restricted fetuses and there is not much you can do about preventing fetal growth restriction. Avoid exercise and follow your perinatologist's instructions to avoid pregnancy complications. Hope this answers your question - if not, please try to specify what you are concerned about.

Be very careful: Not recommended to ride bike with history of syncope. One accident could be disasterous. Check with the doctor that diagnosed the syncope.
