How does lack of sleep kill you?

Many reasons: We spend nearly 1/3 of our lives sleeping, and it is actually a complex behavior and an important part of our well being. During sleep many things happen, including neurochemical and neurotransmitter chores, hormonal changes, memory consolidation, and general restorative function. Without these things, mental and physical health degrades. You can go without food much longer without sleep.
