Should be treated: Gerd is common--present in about 70 million americans. As such, there are easy solutions if you have just symptoms. If however you have inflammation due to gerd, this can be progressive & needs to be controlled. Start with behavior & diet changes (see prior healthtap answers), add acid-blocker medications (either h2-blockers or ppi's). Get evaluated, especially if atypical, chronic &/or worsening.

My infant has gerd, what is the chance that they have a hiatal hernia?

Very Low: Although not impossible, an infant that is growing, developing well, and meeting milestones is highly unlikely to have a major GI problem, even with reflux. In fact most babies do have some degree of reflux, and rarely does medicine help with this - although it can help with the discomfort associated with reflux.

Go to: Another surgeon. Many of today's surgeons are trained laparoscopically but are not so confident in open procedures. Older surgeons are more experienced in both, since they started with open procedures and then they adopted laparoscopic ones.
