Yup: Absolutely, dmd is used for dentist who have earned their degree as doctor of dental medicine which is equivalent to dds (doctor of dental surgery).

DMD and DDS: Both are dentists. Dmd is a doctorate in medical dentistry, and a dds is a doctorate in dental surgery. The title of the doctorate is determined by the dental school the dentist attended.

Not Necessarily: A dmd is a dental degree and can refer to any general dentist or dental specialist. An oral surgeon has completed a specialty program (additional training beyond the dds/dmd degree). Some oral surgeons also have md degrees which make them dmd md or dds md.

What is a dmd?

Dr. Earl Sandroff
Dentistry 43 years experience
Same as a DDS really: The dmd ( doctor of dental medicine) was first sued in the late 70s. The thought was to give us more medical knowledge and not just focus on the teeth and restoring them. My class was one of the first to receive the dmd in the country. It did cause some confusion. But it is more common now and it is up to each institution to decide which degree to give. Neither is superior and they are the same.
