MANY: There are many things that may cause neck & lower back pain. The 2 most common is sprain/strains, and arthritis. Others are disc herniations, infections, tumors, fractures, and congenital deformities. If you are experiencing pain and it does not respond to heat, rest, and stretching exercises, i would suggest that you see your pcp for an evaluation.

Many possible causes: It's been suggested that the 'most common causes' may be 'sprain/strain and arthritis.Possibly, true-don't have the stats-but i find the most common easily reversible causes r dysfunctions of thoracic & cervical spine & ribs.A good history followed by proper exam & possible testing, including a good osteopathic hands-on exam could lead, in many cases, to quick resolution of pain, right in office.

Many things: In this short space i can't even begin to list all the possible causes. See your pcp if this is a chronic problem.

Referred: There are neck pains that can radiate to the chest and vice versa. Be careful with any signs of chest pains, though, especially if you have shortness of breath or the chest pain that radiates to the shoulder as that could be a mi. Get it checked.

Doctors, can my current back problems cause pain and problems with my neck?

Generally No: Back Problems cause back and leg pain. Neck problems are due to the neck. So each area generally addresses the nerves closest to it. We do know that those patients with spine problems in one area of the spine, usually have a higher risk of developing spine problems in another area of the spine.

A 17-year-old female asked:
Can candidiasis be the cause of my neck, back and shoulder pain?

Family Medicine 30 years experience
Probably not: Superficial infections of skin and mucosal membranes by Candida causing local inflammation and discomfort are common. The pain and discomfort would be more related to the skin area, and would be distinguishable from true muscle and joint pain of the "neck, back and shoulder" I assume that you are referring to. If you ant to know the true cause of your issues, see the Dr for an evaluation.

Specific: The list of causes for back pain is almost endless ... I'm sorry but you'll have to be a bit more specific when resubmitting your question.
