Chest pain: If it occurs only with deep inspiration, likely causes could include muscle strain, rib fracture, costochondritis, tracheitis(swelling of airway passage due to flue or cold). The onset of these symptoms, coupled with location of pain can help differentiate cause(s).

More info needed: The exact nature of the pain plus your age and health information are needed. Pain lasting a second or so, for instance is not very worrisome. If you are older and it occurs with exertion, that would be very worrisome. How severe, how long it lasts, associated symptoms, etc. Are important to know. In addition, an examination and some simple tests are needed to make a diagnosis.

Pleuritic pain: Sharp pains on inspiration are pleuritic and not cardiac-- they imply the kind of discomfort brought on by movement of either the chest wall or expansion of the lung tissue. They can occur in inflammatory type states (infection, musculoskeletal inflammation, etc). The can also occur w inflammation of the pleura (which lines the outside of lungs) and pericardium. See doc if severe.

Many reason: Chest pain is never an easy symptom to evaluate; depenidng on his age and co-morbidities, he is at risk for more or less things - these range all the way from the benign pulled chest muscle or costochondritis, to heart disease. He needs to see and discuss it with a doctor.

You need it checked: You need to see your doctor. It could be related to gastro esophageal reflux with esophagitis or your heart like angina pectoris. It is very difficult to say what it could be without a comprehensive detailed history and physical exam and if indicated tests like ekg, endoscopy and other imaging etc.It also can be related to your diet, meds you are taking, gall bladder disease, high cholesterol , obesity.
