ADHD Dextroamphetami: Provided he has undergone all the work-up needed and has been diagnosed with the severe form, he can be prescribed a stimulant. Recently, the age for starting medication has been lowered to the age of 4 years. Cbt (cognitive behavioral therapy) will also help.

Probably: There aren't a lot of studies of children under age 6 taking stimulants. What information is available suggest that they respond similarly to older children, just not as robustly. Most need more than just meds. Parents can benefit from training specifically about handly "difficult" children. Look for resources on chadd.Org.

Yes, if: If your 5 yo has been properly diagnosed by a competent doctor, then yes it's safe to try dextroamphetamine. See my health files to read about the american academy of pediatrics practice standards for diagnosis and treatment of adhd in children and adolescents. If he doesn't tolerate the dextroamphetamine, . Then other treatments should be tried until he normalizes.

ADHD: If prescribed and monitored by his pediatritian or child psychiatrist and the initial workup done and showed no contraindications such as heart or blood, it is generally safe when monitored closely.
