Weight loss drug: The use of Phentermine in appropriate patient is fairly safe when used in normal dosages. The main monitoring is for blood pressure elevation and pulse rate. No routine blood tests are needed. In older patients, any symptoms of chest tightness, palpitations should be reason to stop the drug immediately to investigate further the cause.

Baseline tests: I do not rx any weight loss meds without a complete history incl family history; labwork including thyroid studies, cbc, metabolic profile, lipids, vit d, iodine, HGB A1c etc., ekg, i also do a physical. If needed i order further studies. I make sure my patient is getting screening studies for breast ca, pap and pelvic, colonoscopy. There are many times I have had to treat pts before i allow meds.
