Is dialysis necessary to cure kidney disease?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Simon Kimm
15 years experience in Urology
Unfortunately...: Dialysis is not a treatment for kidney disease and will not cure it. Dialysis performs some of the functions of the kidneys, managing fluid balance, balancing electrolytes, and eliminating some wastes when the kidneys are unable to perform this function. In certain cases of acute kidney injury, the kidneys may improve on their own, but in chronic kidney failure function will not return.
