Dr. Kevin Passer answered
Child Psychiatry 35 years experience
Heredity: Schizophrenia affects 1% of the population. It is felt to run in families, however, this is not always the case. In fact, the actual cause of schizophrenia is not known. There are researchers working to try and determine the cause(s) of schizophrenia. I must add that there are good treatments available which can help to reduce the symptoms and improve functioning in most cases.
