Prevnar (pneumococcal vaccine) & Pneumovax: There are currently 3 different vaccines to reduce infection due to streptococcus pneumoniae. None of these vaccine prevent all types of strep infection. Prevnar (pneumococcal vaccine) 13 was recently introduced to replace the original prevnar (pneumococcal vaccine). This vaccine is used routinely for children ages 2-59 months and for children 60-71 months with underlying medical conditions. Pneumovax 23 is indicated primarily for adults.

Dr. Booth Wainscoat

PV23 and Prevnar (pneumococcal vaccine): There are many different types of streptococcal bacteria. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia & meningitis. A polyvalent (pv) vaccine called pv23 is available for many adults. A conjugated vaccine is recommended for children. Vaccines for group b streptococcus & other streptococcal infections are nearing perfection.
