Sleep: Need assessment to find out the cause of your insomnia so you can treat it. If primary insomnia is determined to be the cause, and your doctor approves it, melatonin is worth a try.
Dr. Julia Stanford
Internal Medicine and Pediatrics 23 years experience
Preferably none: The best treatment for insomnia is finding the underlying cause. Sometimes medicines are needed but first meet with a doctor to see if they are needed. Also, other than melatonin, most other over the counter sleep aids just contain Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and don't truly give one the quality sleep that is needed.

Melatonin is a good: Choice. But before taking medications- make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet & at a comfortable temperature. Use your bedroom only for sleep & sex. Avoid large meals, alcohol, caffeine or exercise in the few hours before retiring. Check with your pharmacist to see if any of your medications have insomnia as a side effect. If your insomnia is chronic - see your physician for evaluation. Good luck.

What is the best method to find basal body temperature?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Neeoo Chin
Fertility Medicine 40 years experience
Not accurate: As you first wake up place a basal body thermometer underneath your tongue for approximately 3 minutes. A digital thermometer is easier and more convenient. Unfortunately basal body temperature taking is very confusing. Any type of movement or any type of activity prior to awakening in taking the temperature will falsely elevated the temperature. Also when the temperature has risen approximately .6 to 1° ovulation has already occurred.

Is it possible that my sleeping pills give me bad dreams?

Dr. Evan Altman
Psychiatry 19 years experience
Yes: Yes, sedative/hypnotic medications (while intended to improve sleep) can cause vivid dreaming to include bad dreams. Some sedative hypnotic medications tends to do this more frequently than others. If you are having bad dreams that are occurring only since starting the sleep aid and no other notable changes in your medication or life have occurred, talk with your doctor about maybe another med.

Leave them alone: The best thing to do is to leave them alone. Try to get rid of the offending agent, heat, over bundling; consider an office visit if baby's skin does not improve. It may be eczema or another common childhood rash.

What could cause me to lose control of my bowels during sleep? I've done this twice.

Sphincter tone: We have 2 sphincters that prevent stool from coming out. One is internal, the other is external. As long as one is working, stool should not come out. If you have had children, you could have damaged these sphincters. Diabetes, ms, infectious diarrhea can cause incontinence.
