what are the best ways to breastfeed twins?

3 doctor answers6 doctors weighed in
Dr. Scott J. Wolfson
Pediatrics 22 years experience
Set a schedule: Setting times to feed seems to work best. Some moms prefer to feed one at a time, giving full individual attention to each child while others feed both simultaneously. Having an extra set of limbs to hold both kids would help as well. Wouldn't that be great?
Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
1 or both at a time: Twins can be breastfed or bottle fed at the same time, or fed individually. If the twins demand more breastmilk than mom makes, then formula can be given after breastfeeding.
Dr. Kevin Windisch
Pediatrics 25 years experience
At the same time: If at all possible, learn to get the babies to latch on at the same time. This will help prevent exhaustion for you.

What is the best method to find basal body temperature?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Neeoo Chin
Fertility Medicine 40 years experience
Not accurate: As you first wake up place a basal body thermometer underneath your tongue for approximately 3 minutes. A digital thermometer is easier and more convenient. Unfortunately basal body temperature taking is very confusing. Any type of movement or any type of activity prior to awakening in taking the temperature will falsely elevated the temperature. Also when the temperature has risen approximately .6 to 1° ovulation has already occurred.

Dr. Nikolaos Zacharias

Different, same.: Fraternal (dizygotic) twins share 50% of their genes, just like any other siblings. Identical (monozygotic) twins typically have the same 100% dna profile, as if clones of one another.

Leave them alone: The best thing to do is to leave them alone. Try to get rid of the offending agent, heat, over bundling; consider an office visit if baby's skin does not improve. It may be eczema or another common childhood rash.

Dr. Ralph Morgan Lewis
Family Medicine 38 years experience
True sunstroke is…: …not a condition to be treated at home; it requires immediate medical attention to lower the body's core temperature so the brain is not permanently damaged. Lesser sun-related illnesses can be treated with cooling, fluids, salt/electrolytes, staying in cool environment. Check with doc as to whether any meds may put you at risk for heat-related problems.
