It depends.: If a woman is at higher risk for having a child with a birth defect, detecting it in their unborn child can be helpful. Depending on the results, she may need to deliver in a tertiary setting or she may choose to terminate the pregnancy, .

What is invasive prenatal diagnosis?

Dr. Pam Yoder answered
Specializes in Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Amnio or CVS: Typically the term "invasive prenatal diagnosis" applies to two tests commonly performed to obtain fetal genetic information, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling. The word "invasive" is used for procedures like these because the uterus is entered through a needle into amniotic sac or through a catheter into placental tissue, respectively.

Are there any disadvantages or complications to prenatal diagnosis?
2 doctor answers • 5 doctors weighed in

Dr. Danielle Jones answered

Yes: Prenatal diagnosis of fetal conditions has both pros and cons - one con is that prenatal diagnosis is never 100% and can cause undue stress on parents during the remainder of the gestation. A desire to obtain prenatal diagnosis should only be done after careful thought about how you & your significant other will respond to the news and what you will do with the information.

A 47-year-old female asked:
What is non invasive prenatal diagnosis?
2 doctor answers • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Bac Nguyen answered
Family Medicine 23 years experience
Ultrasound: Noninvasive means test being performed does not enter the body i.e. Down the throat/airway, up the vaginal canal, anal canal, or piercing through the skin/tissue such as entering blood vessels, abdominal cavity etc...
An ultrasound done without having to do above is noninvasive--such as checking gallbladder for stones etc...

Can you tell me about prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities?

Discussion w/ doctor: This involves an in-depth discussion with you obstetrician. There is far too much detail and specifics to elaborate on this forum. This is a routine discussion during your prenatal care.
