A 43-year-old member asked:

what is the cause of shyness?

Think of others: Shyness and self-consciousness can stem from a desire to avoid the negative evaluation of others. Practicing focusing techniques works well for many people. In your interactions with others focus on them and their interests. Increase your curiosity about them and their experiences. Let them tell you their story. Celebrate their victories and encourage them in their struggles. Therapy could help.
Dr. Kathryn Seifert
Clinical Psychology 26 years experience
Shyness is anxiously avoiding interactions with others. The source can be either genetic, constitution, how you were reared, or a result of early trauma. It is on a continuum from absolutely within normal limits to problematic. It is responsive to mindfulness and CBT therapy since it relates to how you think of yourself and others which affects your feelings. Feelings affect how you behave.

How do you tell the difference between shyness and something else?

Impairment: Most of us are shy in at least some settings. If you are shy but it doesn't interfere with how you live your life, don't worry about it. It shyness starts to rule--avoiding situations, refusing to go somewhere you really want to go, becoming a "homebody, " then it well may be more than just shyness and time to seek help with a professional.
A 40-year-old member asked:

How can I overcome my shyness with girls?

Dr. Cornelia Franz

Ask questions: First would be to find out why you are shy? What are you afraid of? What about girls makes you insecure? Getting answers to some underlying questions can help you overcome that. Girls are just as insecure about guys. Be yourself , be honest, approach them like you would anyone else- respectfully and look to have fun without an agenda. Find things you have in common to talk about.
A 30-year-old member asked:

Is it possible that somebody's drinking problems are caused by his shyness?

Dr. Glen Elliott

Possible,,,unlikely: Shyness manifests in all sorts of ways, and people deal with it in many ways too, including drinking too much. However, blaming a chronic drinking problem on shyness probably misses the point. Alcoholism is a disorder, and we often look for "explanations" as a way of avoiding blame or denying there is a problem. "i'm just shy" is not an answer to why someone drinks to excess.

How can I overcome my shyness around people?

Treatment: Treatment should begin with a good therapist. Treatment may also involve medications that are approved for social phobia like some of the ssri's.
A 47-year-old member asked:

How to overcome shyness with medication?

1 doctor answer4 doctors weighed in
Dr. William Holmes
Child Psychiatry 34 years experience
May Not Be Needed: Shyness by itself is a normal personality trait and does not automatically require treatment. However, if shyness is part of a more severe picture, or if you are not able to do the things you really need to do, then it would be worthwhile to talk to a mental health professional. Medication may or may not be needed.
