Meds and age: As one gets older, there is a degeneration of the electricity around the heart, this can slow down heart rates, beta blockers like Lopressor or toprol (metoprolol) or Coreg can slow down the heart rate, so can calcium channel blockers. Many heart medications can also slow down the heart rate such as antirhythmics.

(220 - age) x 0.80: Your maximum heart rate is roughly calculated as 220 minus your age. This is the upper limit of what your cardiovascular system can handle during physical activity. Because this is an estimate, your number can vary by as much as 15-20 beats a minute (above or below). For rigorous exercise, aim for 70-85% of your maximum heart rate. Medications can alter this heart rate (i.e. Beta blockers).
