A 53-year-old member asked:

what initial tests do i need to take if i have hepatitis b?

Complex...: I think it important to clarify if you actually have hep b or not. Hepatitis b tests are, unfortunately, misinterpreted all too often by non-gi, non-id or non-hepatology folk. Sorry - but it's true. Anyway, the only test that actually proves hep b is the HBV dna test. Even that has 'qualifications' depending on which test used. See a GI md who is a member of aasld or a hepatologist.

Hep B: If you have chronic hep b, then your doctor will follow liver function tests, hep b viral dna load, hep b eag/ab. You may also need surveillance for liver cancer with regular liver sonogram and AFP (a tumor marker blood test).

Be careful: If someone has active hepatitis b infection, they are at risk for liver cancer even if they do not have cirrhosis. Alcohol may increase the risk of developing liver cancer, cirrhosis, and liver failure. It is probably safest to eliminate alcohol (maybe a glass of wine on your birthday).
A 45-year-old member asked:

What does it mean if you have been immuned to hepatitis b?

Dr. Lisa Persaud

You are protected: Being immune to hepatitis b means that you are protected against future attacks with hepatitis b because you were given the hep b vaccine (passive immunity) or you somehow contracted the virus and your body produced antibodies to the virus (active immunity). Hope this helps. Please talk to you doctor to determine what type of immunity you have. Take care!

Healthy food: You can eat anything you like but stay away from liver damaging substances such as alcohol or tylenol (acetaminophen). There is no liver damage food otherwise it would a warning label.
A 45-year-old member asked:

Can one drink a little wine with hepatitis b medications?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Joel Gallant
Infectious Disease 36 years experience
Better to abstain: The problem is not with the medications, but with the hepatitis itself. People with chronic hepatitis b or c can progress more rapidly if they drink. Avoiding alcohol completely is recommended.
