Over the counter med: For a light cough, one might try over the counter cough med such as Robitussin (guaifenesin)-DM for a dry cough or Robitussin (guaifenesin) CF for a productive cough. If associated with fever, wheezing, shortness of breath, or persists and worsens, then see one's doc

Sx relief: Hydrate well. Consider using a warm air vaporizer. Mix several teaspoons of honey into herbal tea with a squeeze of lemon juice. Or make tea with 2 tsp of marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes). Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. See a physician if your cough is not resolving, difficulty breathing or temp > 104.

How can I treat coughing and colds in my 4-month-old?

Very carefully!: Cough, cold and nasal congestion are very common in kids under 6 months. Recommended, safe treatments include nasal saline drops, vaporizer, elevating the head of the bed, and occasional nasal suction. If your baby has a fever, refuses to eat, is extremely irritable, or is wheezing, you need to see the pediatrician. Do not use over-the-counter cough and cold meds, even those sold for "infants".

Which other health problems are caused by whooping cough?

In unvaccinated...: In unvaccinated children, death and brain hemorrhage are likely possibilities (they cough so hard, they can exhaust their breathing muscles or burst a blood vessel in the brain). Even without complications, constant cough for 3 months is a highly unpleasant experience.

My baby always throws up after coughing, should I call my doctor?

Depends: Vomiting after coughing is common in children, and usually not significant. More important is the cough itself. Any cough that is causing difficulty breathing warrants immediate attention (visit to the er or your doctor right now). Any cough that is constant, chronic, accompanied by a whoop or wheezing or fever, or occurs in an infant less than 2 months should be evaluated by your doctor.

I get dizzy when I bend over or cough?

Vasovagal: It sounds like your blood pressure drops when you bend over or cough... In the normal sense the body is reacting more than what it should. Also you might have to get your blood pressure checked to make sure it is not varying significantly in different positions like laying, sitting or standing. Lastly positional vertigo is a possibility.

UH BOY...: There is a reason why they used to call this disease the "100 day cough". In my experience, it takes several weeks(2-4), sometimes longer. This is true despite all we do to try and make your infection go away. I've had patients who have fractured ribs from whooping cough...
