It might...: Goiter is simply an enlarged thyroid. A goiter may or may not produce a normal amount of thyroid hormone. A simple lab test can tell if your thyroid levels are normal or not. If your lab results are normal, then your goiter is probably not affecting your weight. On the contrary, a normal sized thyroid can also run high or low and affect your weight.

No, if: Thyroid blood tests normal if too little hormone, can have weight gain; too much hormone, weight loss.

Does having a thyroid goiter affect your child's weight?

Maybe an increase: A thyroid goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. If the thyroid is not putting out enough hormone, the body's metabolism will be slower, and the brain will send out TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) to tell the thryroid gland to make more hormone. If the thyroid gland can't make enough hormone at its normal size, it will enlarge itself and become a goiter. Low thyroid hormone can cause weight gain.
A 39-year-old member asked:

I have a thyroid goiter so can this make you put on weight?

No: It can cause you to put on weight only if it also affects the ability of the thyroid to make hormones. Frequently, a thyroid goiter will have no affect on thyroid's function, in which case, it should not cause weight gain. See your doctor to have your thyroid function tested if you are worried.
