Yes: Any weight bearing exercise has been shown to preserve bone density. Walking is good, but activities like water aerobics & swimming are non-weight bearing and will not help bone health. One of the problems astronauts face is bone density reduction because of prolonged weightlessness. Look for activities that get you up on your feet-golf, dancing, tennis are a few to keep your bones healthy.

Yes: One of the biggest determinants of bone mineral density is lean body mass. Exercise is important for building lean body mass. Exercise is also important for putting load on your bones. This load is important for bone mass as bone strengthens as stresses are put upon it. Weight-bearing physical activity such as walking or running is better for building/ maintaining bone than non-weight-bearing activities such as swimming.

No: They absolutely do not. In fact, walkers are dangerous and associated with more accidental injuries. The best thing you can do to help your child learn to walk is to give him plenty of floor time, initially tummy time, then scooting/crawling time. This should be in a child-proofed area where you can let him roam free with sturdy furniture to pull up against.

No: This answer depends on the amount of fusion, the location, and the bones involved. There are some genetic disorders that lend to large fusions, creating very abnormal skulls. Crouzon's disease is one such disorder. If fusion is detected or found on imaging, immediate follow up with a neurosurgeon and geneticist is required to help make that decision.

Possibly: Please see your physician regarding clotting. If you do in fact have clotting then you should be seen by your primary care physician for work up of a clotting disorder. If not, then your body will break down clots on its own time. Exercise does not necessarily speed up the process.

Only partly: The DEXA scan gives the bone mineral density at the hips, spine and forearm. These scores can predict osteoporosis: 't-score' of less than -2.5 is considered osteoporosis. However, many people suffer osteoporosis fractures despite having better bone densities. So, we also use other factors: age, ethnicity, size, family history, prior fractures, smoking, alcohol, other conditions to predict risks.

Maybe: Depends on your insurance. For postmenopausal women a bone density test can be an important part of preventive care. If your insurance covers preventive care, such a test may be included.
