Is there risk for infection in the replaced aortic valve?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Mark URMAN
32 years experience in Cardiology
Yes: Any time there is bacteria in our blood stream, it can infect a heart valve. If a heart valve doesn't work properly (leaks too much or doesn't open enough) that risk increases as does if there is an artificial valve. The best way to prevent this is to see your dentist regularly to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and to see your doctor immediately for any infection or persistent fever.
