Interested mother: This disorder, named for a german storyteller, is a psychiatric condition in which the sufferer knowingly feigns illness and submits themselves to numerous unnecessary treatments including hospitalizations and surgeries. The by proxy type is when a family member, usually a child, is subjected to the same treatments urged on by usually a mother of the child.
Dr. George Klauber

Agree completely with Dr. Bensinger. This is potentially a very dangerous condition. Frequently requires child, who is victim of Munchausen by proxy, to be temporarily or permanently be taken away from parent, almost invariably the mother. We, as physicians, have to report any cases of proven or suspected Munchhausen by proxy to social services for best interest of the child.
