Lipoproteins.: Ldl (low density lipoprotein) and HDL (high density lipoprotein) are types of cholesterol. Ldl is so-called "bad cholesterol" because it increases the risk of heart disease by causing hardening of the arteries/atherosclerosis. Hdl is considered "good cholesterol" since it removes cholesterol from the walls of arteries.

Cardiovascular event rates ALWAYS match lipoprotein concentration data, not cholesterol concentrations (commonly discordant). Thus always focus on NMR LDL particle concentrations , NOT cholesterol data. FYI: The "D" in LDL refers to Density compared to the surrounding water; Proteins sink, Fats float, thus combinations of protein with varying fat content vary in density. vs. water.

What are LDL and HDL: Ldl stands for low denstiy lipoprotein. Ldl is a particle which carries cholesterol in the blood. When the concentration of LDL particles is elevated, there is more risk of unexpected heart attacks. Hdl is high density lipoprotein. This particle also carries cholesterol. Hdl particles at times, may scoop cholesterol out of blood vessels and bring it to the liver for excretion from the body.

LDL particles carry all fats, a typical particle carrying 3,000 to 6,000 fat molecules. Which fats? Whichever fats are present. Water molecules will not mix with fat molecules, the reason ALL cell membranes are built of fat molecules; cells are literally fat organized water droplets. The outer proteins of Lipoprotein particles are water soluble and these particles enable fats to move around the body in the water outside cells so that cells have both access to fat molecules to ingest & ways to remove excess.

Particles vs. Fats: LDL (low density lipoprotein) ; HDL (high density lipoprotein) are not cholesterol but complex protein particles which transport all fat molecules in water outside cells. ↑ed LDL concentrations ↑es incidence of cardiovascular diseases by driving atherosclerosis, thus bad. ↑ed HDL considered good because they remove fats from cells which need to get rid of fats, including in the walls of arteries.

(Choles / HDL) < 3.0: It is better to have a high HDL and a low ldl. Hdl is the good and LDL is the bad cholesterol. Doctors want a patient's total cholesterol divided by HDL to be less than 3.0.

Nuts good for HDL: Eating nuts tends to increase HDL (good) cholesterol and decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol. The effect is larger if triglycerides are also elevated. See this excellent review paper for more information: http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pmc/articles/pmc3257681 also remember that weight loss and exercise improve cardiovascular risk substantially.
