A 34-year-old member asked:

do back braces and weight lifting belts work?

No: Several studies have shown that back braces do not reduce work place injuries. However, there is evidence to show that back braces can help maintian a proper lifting posture, and therefore some workers choose to use a back brace. Wearing a back brace has not been shown to be harmful, and therefore if it provides a "feel good" effect then by all means wear it.

The gums above my two front teeth are swollen and I need them to go back to normal within 72 hours what do I do?

Brush, rinse, floss: Brush and keep them clean, floss them gently and try rinsing with warm salt water in that area specifically. Rinse for a minute or so or as long as you can. This should help it go away. If the swelling is not going away you need to see your dentist to have it checked out. Good luck.

What are "automation" and "adjustment" as keys to weight loss?

Dr. Lisa Saponaro

Routine change: Automation refers to making things "automatic" in your weight loss routine. This would include "go to" meals that you have established to be within your caloric intake value. It also includes things like scheduling of exercise so that it becomes routine. Adjustment is the process of accepting change. The more routine (automatic) you make exercise and meals the better the chances of success.

It's more fun: It's both a support mechanism and a form of friendly competition. It also gives you an automatic accountability system. Most importantly, studies show that it works well.

Need Gynecology Eval: Vaginal bleeding is not always your menstrual peiod. Sometimes women get miscarriages that happen about the time that they expect their periods. Also, there are a lot of conditions that can develop in the uterus that can cause bleeding such as fibroids, uterine polyps, cancer, infections, etc. Your sister should go and see her pcp or a gynecologist for an evaluation of her vaginal bleeding.
