PTSD symptoms: Persistent re-experiencing of a traumatic event that threatened death or serious injury, or that one witnessed in another. Persistent avoidance of stimuli which might remind one of the event, and generalized numbing. Symptoms of increased arousal such as intense anxiety, difficulty falling asleep, nightmares if you do sleep, exaggerated "startle" responses, and hypervigolance are also common.

Agree w Dr. Pappas: I will add a little bit more about avoidance. Avoidance may be toward people, places, things, smells, sounds or sights that trigger thoughts, memories, feelings and even flashbacks of the traumatic event (s). Avoidance can also come in the form of isolation. Avoidance is often what prevents people for getting treatment for their ptsd.
