As many as you need: Many uncomplicated pregnancies may only need 1 ultrasound. High risk pregnancies could need as many as 20. Ultrasounds at different times in pregnancy have different indications. If you wonder whether you need additional ultrasounds, ask your doctor.

Varies: Some pregnancies require no ultrasounds. Most doctors will order at least one preferably done between 18-22 weeks when we can evaluate the anatomy of the baby. An ultrasound can be done in the late first trimester as part of genetic screening. Other sonograms would be ordered for a variety of medical conditions and complications of pregnancy.

A 23-year-old male asked:

When you're expecting, how many ultrasounds do you get, and at what months?

Varies: Typically you will get one early in pregnancy strictly for dating and to document the presence of a fetal heart beat. Around 20-22 weeks, a scan for anatomy is performed. In a normal pregnancy, that is all that insurances tend to cover. In high-righ pregnancies, there tend to be more ultrasounds throughout the 3rd trimester.
