It's possible: Herpes on the hand is called Herpetic Whitlow. It tends to occur on the thumb and index finger. It starts as a burning or pain in the finger followed by redness and swelling and then fluid filled blisters. 60% are due to HSV 1 and 40% due to HSV 2. Can catch it from touching a herpes sore on another person or on oneself. For patient information and pictures see: http://bit.ly/1xNa2X5

Dishydrotic exzyma : Very very itchy. Tell him to try over-the-counter 1/2% or 1% hydrocortisone cream on the bumps. If that doesn't work you should see his provider.
