do any sports stunt growth during puberty or stop a period from coming sooner?

If intense: We see this in particular in girls who are doing sports like gymnastics, ballet or other intense training like distance running. We call it "female athlete triad" One of the reasons it is dangerous for girls is that it is essential for you to create your best bone mass over these years. Keep in mind the average girl in the US will start her period at age 12, but many certainly start later!
