why does my knee hurt so badly after surgery?

Dr. Steven Shannon

Postoperative pain: Knee pain and swelling is a normal process after knee surgery in the immediate days following. The severity does depend on what type of surgery you had. For example: recovery from a total knee arthroplasty takes months for swelling to slowly resolve. Pain typically should improve within 1-2 weeks. New onset of pain months out would be worrisome and should be evaluated by your surgeon or local ER.
