Can a urinary tract infection affect becoming pregnant?

No: An uncomplicated bladder infection should not cause any difficulties getting pregnant. The urinary system is completely separate from the reproductive system. Any serious illness such as a kidney infection could temporarily affect fertility, but no long term issues should result.
Dr. Michael Carson
Internal Medicine 29 years experience
No: There is no evidence that urinary tract infections will prevent someone from becoming pregnant. During pregnancy, obstetricians screen for early signs of infections because mild bladder infections are a risk for pyelonephritis (infection of the kidney), and "pyelo" can lead to preterm contractions. Also, the antibiotics commonly used these days are reasonable to take during pregnancy.
Dr. George Klauber
Specializes in Pediatric Urology
Probably not: Sex in the presence of an active UTI may well be uncomfortable or painful, so why not wait to be impregnated until after the UTI has been treated. However, urinary and genital tracts are separate so there is no reason that you can't get pregnant when you have a uti. Utis during pregnancy should be treated immediately because of risk of kidney infection.
