There are so many!: and only your eye doctor, or glaucoma specialist knows which one is best to use in your case. There has to be an initial workup done of your vision, visual fields, intraocular pressure taken, and optic nerve topography to look at the extent of glaucoma present. Then each individual drops available depends on what other medical conditions or medications you are on. All are prescription only.

Medications: Several classes of medications are prescribed for treating glaucoma. These include: prostaglandin analogues, alpha adrenergic agonists, beta adrenergic antagonists, carbonic anhyrase inhibitors, cholinergic agonists, & hyperosmolar agents. In development are rhokinase inhibitors. Laser and incisional surgical treatments are also options. Primarily though, glaucoma is treated with eye drops.

Watch videos: There are several videos on youtube demonstrating proper and varying techniques for instilling eyedrops. Best to steady yourself, let gravity help you, don't touch the bottle tip to the eye, and only let 1 drop come out since that is already plenty for the size of the tear lake. Close your eyes after to help the drop to absorb into the eye, and space drops apart.

Maybe: You need to see an ophthalmologist and have an eye examination. This includes checking your eye pressures and visual fields.

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that may be associated with high pressure. It is critical that if it is suspected that you see an ophthalmologist to make a proper diagnosis. Remember not everyone with high pressure has glaucoma and not everyone with normal pressure is free of the disease.

A 58-year-old female asked:

Can contacts be worn comfortably when being treated for glaucoma with eye drops.

Yes: Glaucoma drops do not change the power of the eye nor the surface architecture so for most contacts can continue to be worn. A few might have some changes in the tear volume which will either need supplementation or a change in the wear schedule. Hopefully the drops are doing the job for you.

A 58-year-old female asked:

Can eye drops stop progression of glaucoma or just slow it down?

Potentially: Anti-glaucoma eye drops lower the pressure in the eye. If the pressure in the eye is lowered to a sufficient degree, then progression of glaucoma may be stopped or at least slowed. Regular check with your ophthalmologists are necessary to determine this.

Need docs answers! what eye drops are used to combat glaucoma?

Pressure lowering: In glaucoma, the internal eye pressure of the eye is elevated beyond the ability of the back of the eye to withstand it. There are 4 different categories of eyedrops to approach this. Some inhibit inflow of fluid into the eye; others increase outflow. Most work well but laser treatment and surgery is available as a next step.
