Midcycle: Ovulation almost always occurs 14 days before the menstrual period starts, and the new cycle starts the first day bleeding begins. The normal menstrual cycle can be from 21 to 35 days long. So ovulation can happen anywhere from 7 to 21 days after the period starts - depending on the cycle length. Most women start a period (and new cycle) every 28 to 30 days - so they ovulate 14 to 16 days later.

Symptoms vary: Ovulation is associated with an increase or change in vaginal discharge that some women will be aware of, and some women will have abdominal or pelvic pain associated with ovulation, others may have spotting around the time of ovulation. However, most women do not know for sure when they ovulate. There are ovulation (lh) predictor kits available that can help to determine when ovulation is due.

Women ovulate 14 days prior to their next period, therefore, if you have regular periods, you can calculate when it occurs.

Regular periods: If a woman gets regular periods each month, she is almost certainly ovulating each month. If you're concerned, your doc can check a blood test for a Progesterone level about one week before menses.
